Are kids going square eyed?

When I was growing up I constantly heard from my Mother, “don’t sit too close to the TV or your eyes will go square,” and yet now children now are being raised with iPads and other screen technologies that could be more dangerous than sitting close to a TV.

Just the other day I was at an AFL game and I saw a baby less than 12 months old, sitting on her mum’s lap with an iPhone in her hand. Her Mum got to watch the game, and the baby was playing some simple game designed for children and didn’t make a peep. There was no crying and she never looked up from the screen.

At Christmas last year, my younger cousins spent more time on their video games and iPads than greeting and talking to everyone, even avoiding talking to the other children close to their age. What does this mean for the future in terms of the social skills?

It made me consider my childhood. Computers, for one, weren’t a big deal at the time, the internet was a lot slower and the internet wasn’t accessible with appliances such as laptops, iPads and iPhones. We had a computer room, where my sister and I would have to patiently wait just for the computer to turn on. More often than not, we would prefer to go outside and play.

When I think about the future and raising children in this technological age, I believe that it’s about finding the balance for appropriate “screen time.” Distracting your children and young babies with iPhones and iPads so parents can have a break from their children is not proactive, but that doesn’t mean we should try and stop children from ever having access screen technologies.

How do we find that line? Should we be creating tech-free zones for children?

    Multiple Programs

    3DS max:
One main thing I hear about 3DS Max from all our teachers is that it can help with the learning curve for other 3D animation programs. So far in this course, there's still a lot of the program I don't understand but in terms of animating that's where my knowledge is.

    Maya:
The only experince I have with Maya is looking at projects my friend Maddie has done in her course. And even then I really prefer 3DS max but that might be because she's done very different projects from us. She's working on the architecture of locations and rooms, not rigging and animating.

    Blender:
I've actually used this program once before, I followed a tutorial to make a wreaking ball mainly to get the jist of the program. I get told that it has a learning curve, but it doesn't seem to be too different. Their are some settings I could see people getting annoyed with if they work with Autodesk, because some mouse settings are reversed sort of deal but it's very simple to change them to suit your needs. I'm actually really shocked it's completely free, even if used it for commercial purposes, you don't need to credit blender. Which is something I really think I'll be taking advantage of.

    Mixamo:
This program is a easy way to create, rig and animate 3D characters. This is definitly a program I want to learn, but there is a cost. There are free services avaliable to look into though.

    Sculptris:
For digital sculpting, it's said by the company, pixologic who made it, to be a good beginning to sculpting digitally. For people more experienced they offer Zbrush, which is another program I'd probably want to try out eventually. But probably not anytime soon.

    Quixel Suite:
This has a lot of different programs, they have Megascans to help with materials, bringing in real world surfaces. NDO for mapping. DDO for texturing. 3DO which is a light weight model and material previewer directly fused with photoshop. They refer to Photoshop in comparisons, saying that they make photoshop look like a normal editing program. I imagine the learning curve would be steep for these programs but worth looking into, even if the cost is quite large.

    Make Human:
This is an open source for 3D humanoid characters for free, this also has a compatiability with Zbrush and mudbox.

    Final Cut:

This is an editing program I need to learn at some point, mostly for the uni course I want to go to because this is what they use. I'm hoping that my experience with sony vegas will lessen the learning curve.

    Sony Vegas:
I've been using Sony Vegas since I was 12. This is a program that even 5 years of experience there's so many things I don't know about this program. I do know it better but there are still aspects I haven't need to try out yet.

    Audition:
Using audition now, changes how I look at editing audio through Vegas. Anytime I'm working on a video now, I'm aware how I could do it in audition and how much easier it could be. Sound editing is a lot of fun for me, and I hope to learn more about audition, in class and in my own time. Including editing dialogue.

    After Effects:
This is a program with so much potential, there's so much I still want to learn in so many other aspects. I'm hoping to learn a lot in my own time and in this course. What I've been taught so far, I've enjoyed and taken it completely onboard.

    Business Jobs

Skills I need for future business. We divided up jobs between us and chose what we prefer, as well as including the other things we know we'll be doing. These are my responsibilities:
    • Manager of Accounting & Finance
Right now, I'm doing the budget for the Comission but also just to get estimates of how much money we'd need even if we don't get the Comission. I'll be looking into the possibility of a kickstarter/plausible and what people could get if they pledge a specific amount of money.
    • Director and Co-Director
I wouldn't be the Director for our main production, The Last Exorcist, but we plan to do other short series. Especially if we don't get the comission, the plan is to do short animations instead of our large project first. These would be the projects I would oversee, produce and direct.
    • Animator
I'd be doing 3D and 2D animation. 3D for The Last Exorcist, 2D for the shorts we plan to create.
    • Voice Actor
I'm starting to look at tutorials and videos, notable Jonah Scott's videos so far. And I'm looking into getting the same Microphone and equipment as him. I'm thinking that I'll open a blog for voice acting attempts of characters from shows and movies. Probably orphan black characters because theirs a large amount of characters and different voices.
    • Editor
Maddie has said that she definitly wants me to edit the trailers together, I've done a few trailers in the past but recently I made one that shows my improvement in editing. This is a trailer I did for an RPG on tumblr. I'd like to edit the animations together too, but since I haven't done that yet but I've done trailers, I only know for sure that I could do the trailer edits.
    • Manager of Content
This is managing our scheduling, as well as what content we're doing and when we'll be working on it. Mainly I got this because I'm already scheduling things that we're meant to have done if my mates want to have the trailer done by next year.
    • Manager of Podcasts
This is a way in the future thing I'll be doing when we start to do Podcasts. Which might be long down the track, or earlier as a way to get our audio skills up.
    • Manager of Merchandise
One of the main ways productions get money is through merch and marketing and this is something I have a little bit of experience with. I'm thinking that we could also sell fan designs using the same concept that DFTBA uses. They have a royalty agreement that really like the fan gets half the profit and so do we, but this is once things are out there and we have a community.
    • Producer
I don't know enough of what a producer does to be sure that this is a responsibility of mine but it's definetly a job I need to look into. Producing and managing is something I'd like to do but I need to understand more about it first.

    VET - Character Design Research

For the Character Design Research I looked into the web series RWBY, specifically the characters Blake and Yang because I'm interested in their costume design and how they show their personality through the costume. And how initial concepts change. I also looked at the concepts of facial expressions.
